Associate, Real Assets

For more than 50 years, the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology Pension Plan (CAAT Pension Plan) has been delivering secure lifetime pensions to employees of the Ontario college system. The Plan assumed its current jointly sponsored governance structure in 1995 and, more recently, has been growing its number of participating employers both related to and beyond the college sector.  The mission of the CAAT Pension Plan is to improve the financial security of members in retirement with meaningful and secure benefits supported by stable and appropriate contribution rates.  The investment strategy is developed out of an asset-liability analysis and detailed risk assessment. The Plan’s $10.8 billion pension fund is well-diversified across a broad range of public and private asset classes and return sources. The Plan’s guiding principles help ensure assets are invested in a prudent and skillful manner and follow the highest standards for quality, compliance and performance that will contribute to the long-term sustainability of the pension fund.

We have an exciting new opportunity for an Associate, Real Assets to work within our Private Market Investment team.  The Associate, Real Assets is responsible for working with the Portfolio Manager in the identification, evaluation, selection, and monitoring of CAAT’s Real Asset investments. The Private Markets team is focused on building diversified portfolios through fund commitments and co-investments. By combining best-in-class manager selection with the ability to strategically deploy capital into attractive opportunities, the team seeks to deliver attractive risk-adjusted returns over the long term.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the screening, due diligence, monitoring and reporting of real asset fund commitments and co-investments
  • Participate in the evaluation of prospective real asset investment opportunities, including: valuation, market trends, competition, and key investment risks and merits
  • Maintain and update the pacing model
  • Conduct research on real asset investment themes and perform special projects as needed
  • Prepare materials for and participate in internal meetings and external due diligence
  • Monitor current real asset investments and maintain a prioritized pipeline of fund and co-investment opportunities
  • Review real asset-related Investment Committee and senior management reporting materials and assist with accounting, finance or administrative functions when needed; review regular reporting and participate in conference calls related to real asset fund investments and co-investments
  • Actively contribute to Real Asset and Investment team discussions
  • With direction from senior staff, contribute to the standardization and documentation of CAAT's private market investing practices and processes

Qualifications:

  • 3-5+ years of work experience including at least two (2) years in infrastructure or real estate-focused investment banking, transaction advisory or direct investing; one (1) year of experience at an Associate level is preferred
  • Undergraduate Degree from an accredited institution; MBA or CFA/ CPA designation preferred
  • Excellent financial analytical and modelling skills and an ability to perform cash flow, valuation and capital structure analysis
  • Sound working knowledge of portfolio management, due diligence, capital markets, accounting and real asset investing
  • Strong knowledge of investment research and trends
  • Exceptional oral and written communication, interpersonal and critical thinking skills

Bilingual Receptionist

We have an opportunity for a Bilingual Receptionist (French/English) to work within our Office Services Team.

Once Here:

  • Provide reception/telephone services for the CAAT Pension Plan
  • Greet visitors and direct them to the appropriate staff, as well as, being responsible for all areas of reception, the receptionist keeps the information current for backup coverage
  • Provide a full range of clerical and administrative support services for Plan staff, which includes various types of correspondence and reports as required
  • Coordinate catering for staff events and governance meetings and ensure staff dietary restrictions are tracked
  • Maintain CAAT contacts, correspondences and assist with mass mailings through our database CRM (Customer Relationship Management)
  • Maintain/format Board minutes and update resolution tables
  • Back up to Administrative Assistant to prepare invites for CAAT Board & committee meetings through Outlook and other special events
  • Maintain and update internal staff lists
  • Provide for special handling of documents as required for the department, i.e. courier, including preparation and distribution of Board, Committee and Sponsors’ Committee packages. All couriers are tracked/verified for accounting
  • Notify Cadillac Fairview for maintenance, repair needs and forwarding notices to CAAT staff
  • Responsible for posting staff documentation under appropriate folders on Staff Intranet
  • Book and monitor CAAT boardrooms for meetings and reception calendar for incoming visitors
  • Sort and distribute incoming correspondences, identify items requiring urgent action and expedite to the appropriate individual

Associate, Private Equity

The Associate, Private Equity will be responsible for assisting the Portfolio Manager, Private Equity in the identification, evaluation, selection, and monitoring of CAAT's private equity investments. You must have strong attention to detail. Working collaboratively in a small, informal team setting or independently with solid prioritization and organizational skills are also important strengths.

Administrative Assistant - Pension Solutions

Investment Finance Analyst

The Investment Finance Analyst will support CAAT Pension Plan’s investment accounting, compliance, valuation, investment tax, trade processing and financial reporting processes and the related reconciliations and maintenance of underlying data.
The successful candidate will have a strong interest and desire to learn basic programming skills and it is expected that, over time, the successful candidate will learn to apply these skills towards the efficiency initiatives of the broader team.

  • You will prepare monthly and quarterly compliance reports pertaining to CAAT Pension Plan’s investment activities
  • You will prepare reconciliations of custodian and manager net asset values on a monthly basis and assist in analyzing exceptions.
  • You will over time, assist in the rollout of automation techniques while formally learning basic programming and automation software.
  • You will bring suggestions to the Senior Business Process Analyst on ways to improve current practices.
  • You will calculate and verify accuracy of invoices from investment managers, consultants, and other investment service providers as required.

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Director, Actuarial Solutions to lead CAAT Pension Plan’s actuarial services team supporting the new member and employer experiences for the Plan’s growth initiatives.  Reporting to the Vice President, Pension Solutions, this highly collaborative, people focused leader will be responsible for providing direction and oversight to the actuarial team.

The successful candidate will have technical experience in the following key areas:

  • Progressive experience in the pension industry with focus on complex actuarial topics, regulatory and pension plan policy and actuarial valuation along with a minimum of fifteen (15) years at a senior leadership level.
  • Exceptional leadership abilities, demonstrated through the building of highly engaged, professional and collaborative teams and the establishment of strong working relationships at all levels of the organization and related stakeholder groups. 
  • Demonstrated record of success in mentoring and guiding teams through complex actuarial and regulatory challenges in support of merger and conversion initiatives.  Providing leadership on pension legislation and Income Tax Act provisions, acting as an escalation point on all growth-related actuarial matters.
  • Leading an actuarial team through the end to end process of bringing new employers who currently sponsor a defined benefit plan or capital accumulation plan (i.e. a defined contribution pension plan, Group RRSP, TFSA, etc.) into the CAAT Pension Plan.

A University Degree, Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA) designation along with twenty (20) or more years of experience in the pension industry and at least fifteen (15) years of direct people leadership with the demonstrated ability to grow highly engaged teams is required.  Sound judgement and the ability to build strong relationships within teams and Plan stakeholders along with relevant experience with multi-jurisdiction pension plans and interacting with regulators is expected. Previous experience within jointly-sponsored or other multi-employer pension plans is strongly preferred.

  • Progressive experience in the pension industry with working knowledge on actuarial valuation, regulatory and pension plan policy along with a minimum of fifteen (15) years in a client relationship management or business development leadership role.

An engaging speaker and subject matter expert in the pension industry with demonstrated success establishing of strong working relationships at all levels of organizations and related stakeholder groups.

Pension Software Testing Analyst

We are looking for a talented, resourceful, quick learning Pension Software Testing Analyst to join our team.

In this role you will support internal systems by developing and executing testing plans for the pension administration and related systems. The Analyst will assist the Senior Pension System Testing Analysts for reviewing requirements for all modifications to the system, providing input on the requirements and subsequently developing plans to test any pension system modifications that arise as a result of the requirements. The Analyst will document promotion procedures and provides test results to management. The Analyst is also responsible to educate other teams in the Organization on system related fixes and enhancements. The Analyst is responsible for maintaining the regression test bed as well as keeping test cases up-to-date.

We are looking for someone with the following attributes:

  • Minimum of a College Diploma with requisite experience in software testing environments
  • Five or more years working with pension or benefit data, good comprehension of pension calculations, use of various data mining/modeling tools, knowledge of Structured Query Language, Oracle and or Microsoft SQL Server databases, ETL methods for data transformation including scripting and/or programming familiarity
  • Experience using automated regression testing tools such as Ranorex, MicroFocus/Borland Silk Test Suite, jUnit, Unified Functional Testing (HP) or similar platform.
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • A high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.

Once here:

  • You will review defects and other requests from the CAAT ticketing system, the CPAS CQ database and assists the Data Management team as well as the Senior Pension System Testing Analysts in determining the impact of the request on the pension system.
  • You will help design and document the architecture of the testing environment including the maintenance schedule, data refreshes as well as software updates.
  • You will test all defects and enhancements to the pension administration system including interfaces to external systems.
  • You will maintain the regression test bed and creates new test cases for various pension system modifications.
  • You will provide training support to staff on changes that have been promoted to the production system.
  • You will work closely with developers, either CAAT staff, CPAS or contract to help articulate requirements. Tests all updates as they are delivered.
  • You will execute automated methods for testing the various functions of the pension system at all tiers. Uses automated testing software where possible for database tests, web application tests as well as Cognos tests.
  • You will maintain a comprehensive automated regression test plan for the core activities in the pension system such as Active Member Annual Statements, Retired Member & Surviving Spouse Statements, Cost of Living Adjustment calculations, Highest Average Pensionable Earnings calculation, Termination, Retirement and Death benefit calculations, LTD PA/T4A calculations as well as the complexities introduced by multi-employer, concurrent employment and deferred benefit calculations, among others.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining the production copies of all Cognos letters and forms and maintaining version control for changes done by CAAT or externally.

  • Leading a corporate communications team in identifying opportunities to develop new, innovative solutions, reaching strategic communication goals, delivery targets and benefits realization. Keen interest in staying current on emerging communications, marketing and research trends and platforms, seeking opportunities to apply them proactively.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective advice and support to a broader leadership team that results in the measurable enhancement of an organization's brand. 

A University Degree and professional communications designation or equivalent combination of qualifications and experience, along with a minimum of ten (10) years of professional internally focused communication experience and at least five (5) years of direct people leadership experience in the delivery of large complex multifaceted communication portfolios is required. Relevant experience supporting a variety of internal stakeholder groups and departments with communications best practices within the pension, insurance or financial industries or other service related, member focused organizations is also required. Previous experience within jointly-sponsored or other multi-employer pension plans is strongly preferred.

  • Ability to leverage industry knowledge and emerging trends, identifying opportunities to develop and implement impactful process improvements, positioning an organization on the leading edge of innovative best practices and project strategy
  • Demonstrated experience recommending and defining standards and best practice guidelines, ensuring that business processes are repeatable, well developed and documented in support of ongoing program delivery and service excellence
  • Demonstrated success in leading teams of direct and indirect reports, overseeing the management of project teams and vendor performance while supporting project leads, ensuring exceptional program outcomes and the delivery of multiple projects in alignment with program priorities, delivery targets and benefits realization
  • Success in the overall accountability of project plans, collaborating with a wide variety of stakeholders in the implementation of the overall strategic direction of projects while building and sustaining strong working relationships at all levels

A University Degree and Project Management Professional (PMP, PgMP, PfMP) designation or equivalent combination of qualifications and experience, along with a minimum of ten (10) years of direct project, program and people leadership in the delivery of large complex multifaceted programs is required.  Relevant experience within the pension, insurance or financial industries and a solid foundation in cross-functional, integrated, multi stream project delivery is also required.  Experience working with Smart Sheet and the design, development and delivery of playbooks are both strongly preferred.

In this important role, you will help develop and utilize new tools to properly value benefits and measure risks in non-routine situations. You will support the Growth Team in analyzing trends and performing actuarial projections. You will be involved in a wide range of day-to-day tasks, internal projects, and special activities associated with the Plan's growth initiative. 

A Bachelor's degree in Actuarial Science, Statistics or Mathematics, and an Associate of the Society of Actuaries (ASA) designation (or working toward) along with three (3) or more years' of progressive professional experience in the actuarial area of the pension industry and a thorough understanding of pension calculations and process improvement make you an ideal candidate.  You must also have significant abilities with financial, analytical, and modelling skills.

Acting as a front-line pension administrator you will be responsible for the day-to-day administration of the CAAT Pension Plan. As part of our Service Delivery teams, you will process all types of transactions, calculations, and activities using the administration system, and will collaborate with internal teams and external plan members to ensure best in class service. 

We are looking for experienced individuals with a combination of the following attributes:

  • Understanding of complex pension administration systems and working with pension plan texts
  • Expertise in processing critical transactions and activities (e.g. terminations, retirements, etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience executing test plans/cases, defect analysis, quality reviews, and data integrity
  • Strong knowledge of applicable legislation
  • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail, and a mathematical aptitude
  • A quick learner with experience in member transactions
  • Exceptional communication skills for a business environment (both written and oral)
  • Sound judgment, collaborative team player who is detail oriented and logical

Your College diploma or University Degree, with at least 5 years of experience with multiple employer pension plans (MEPP), public sector pension administration, or an outsourcing service provider will make you a strong candidate. You may also have or be actively pursuing your Pension Plan Administration Certificate, Certified Employee Benefits Specialist Program, or Certified Benefits Professionals designation(s).

  • You will process and complete all transaction activities including terminations, retirements, deaths, transfers, service purchases (buybacks) and pension estimates
  • You will interact with employers and their members, former members, and retired members
  • You will participate in structured training sessions
  • You will conduct process reviews and support audit activities
