New employers

The Plan is continuing to implement its new employer strategy, as explained in the last newsletter. Under the strategy, we are supporting initiatives in the college community which may lead to new or reconfigured employers in the system. We want to ensure that those working on college-related functions with a recognized employer have an opportunity to be part of the Plan. It is not a strategy to expand outside the college system.
Along with the Ontario Colleges Library System and long-standing employer Ontario College Application Service, the Plan’s “non-college employers” now include the College Employer Council (CEC), and a closed group of employees from the Northern Centre for Advanced Technology (NORCAT).
The CEC is the bargaining agent for collective agreements with the colleges, and the policy holder for the college system’s health and insurance benefits. NORCAT provides specialized mine training and occupational health and safety services in Ontario’s hard rock mining industry. The employees in the closed group are past Plan members from Cambrian College.
Although no further non-college employers have come forward, the Plan will consider applications from other employers who meet the requirements for membership.
