CAAT Pension Plan Waiver (if not becoming a Member) (pdf) (Word)
Definition / Eligibility:
An Other Than Regular Full-time (OTRFT) Employee of a College who terminated before becoming eligible to be a Member, and is rehired on an OTRFT basis must wait to join the CAAT Pension Plan. They may choose to join when they have completed 24 months of continuous eligibility service and are actively working (See: New Hire - Other Than Regular Full-Time). Once they join the Plan, they remain Members as long as they are employed and under age 71. At age 71 they must stop contributing and start receiving their pension, even if still employed.
College Responsibilities:
- At date of hire, give Employee a copy of the Member Handbook and the pamphlets "It's about your privacy" and "Other than Regular Full-Time Employment."
- Obtain eligibility service record from previous College(s).
- Notify Employee when they become eligible to join the CAAT Pension Plan.
- Complete Pension Membership Enrolment form if Employee is becoming a Member. The Member may want to name a non-Spouse Beneficiary in Section B, "Personal Information " and must sign page 2, "Consent for the Collection and Use of Personal Information".
- Make copies of the Pension Membership Enrolment form for your records and return the original to the Plan.
- When enrolling Employee, you must ask if Employee has any service that is eligible for purchase or if they have any service that can be transferred into the Plan. Most transfer agreements have time limits and costs usually increase if the purchase is delayed. If the Member has any such service, please refer to Section 6 - Transfers and begin the process immediately. Note that OTRFT service prior to becoming eligible for enrolment cannot be purchased.
- Tell Employee that if they decide not to join the Plan when they are first eligible, and they decide at a later date that they want to join, they must satisfy the eligibility conditions at that time.
- Complete a CAAT Pension Plan Waiver if Employee is not becoming a Member of the Plan and retain for your records.
- If Employee does not want to become a Member of the Plan and refuses to sign the waiver, document the refusal and keep on file.
CAAT Pension Plan Responsibilities:
- Enrol the Member.
